Frank Janssen

Professor Frank Janssen is the holder of the Brederode Chair in Entrepreneurship at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Belgium, where he also is the academic coordinator of the interdisciplinary program in entrepreneurship (CPME) and the Vice-Dean for International Affairs of the Louvain School of Management. He has taught entrepreneurship at UCL, HEC Paris (France) and EDHEC Business School (France) and has been a short-term visiting professor in American, African, Asian and European universities. He has received international teaching and research awards. He has an extended experience in the private sector and has worked as an expert for public and private organizations, both national and international.

Dr. Janssen holds a master’s degree in Law (UCL), a master’s degree in Economics (UCL), a MBA (Western Carolina University, USA) and a PhD in Business Administration (Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, France).

He is a member of the Centre for Research on Entrepreneurial Change and Innovative Strategies (CRECIS, UCL), of the Institut de Recherche sur les PME (Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Canada), of the Board of the International French-speaking Research Association on SMEs and Entrepreneurship (AIREPME), of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship faculty group of the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS). He is Associated Editor of the Revue Internationale P.M.E. (leading French-speaking academic journal on SMEs and Entrepreneurship). He is ad-hoc reviewer for numerous international journals and has been a member of the scientific committees of many conferences.

His research interests and recent publications are in the fields of firm growth, corporate governance in SMEs, social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial motivations, entrepreneurship and regulation, research methods in entrepreneurship, as well as entrepreneurial pedagogy. He has edited, authored and co-authored books, book chapters, scientific and professional articles on these topics.

Brederode Chair in Entrepreneurship

Germain Simard

Germain Simard has been active in the domain of regional development and entrepreneurship since the beginning of his career. During 30 years he worked in various Canadian government departments responsible for economic development, first as an economist, later as a planner and manager of business assistance programs.

When he retired, he spent 10 years as a project manager at HEC Montreal, specifically with Prof. Louis Jacques Filion, head of the Chaire d’entrepreneuriat Rogers-J.-A.-Bombardier. Mr Simard completed his studies in Economics at University Laval in 1967 and later in 1976-1977 at l’École Nationale d’administration (ENA) in Paris, France.

AS a manager of business assistance programs, Mr Simard was invited as a Board member of several organizations involved in economic development and entrepreneurship. In 2002, he was head of the organizing committee of the 6th Congrès International francophone sur l’entrepreneuriat et la PME (CIFEPME) held in Montreal. At this occasion he was elected director general of AIREPME, l’Association internationale de recherche en entrepreneuriat et PME, an organization that contributes to the promotion of french studies in the fields of entrepreneurship and SMEs worldwide; insure the promotion of theoretical and applied research in the fields of management and economics.

Josée St-Pierre

Josée St-Pierre, Ph.D., is graduated from Laval University (Quebec), Canada, where she obtained her doctorate in finance and won the Canadian Harvey Rorke Memorial Prize for her thesis. She is co-director of the Institute for Research on SMEs, which she cofounded in 1997. She is also Director of the Research Laboratory on Business Performance studying various aspects of SMEs’ performance, including innovation, internationalization, and risk.

Dr. St-Pierre has made extensive research on various aspects of the performance of SMEs where she adopts a multidisciplinary perspective, focusing as much on conception of performance, as its determinants and the different ways to measure it. She has published more than forty articles in international journals such as Technovation, Small Business Economics, Venture Capital, International Small Business Journal, Benchmarking: An International Journal. She published three books on SMEs : “Gestion financière des PME : théories et pratiques” which won the PriceWaterhouseCoopers prize in 2000 and «La gestion du risque : comment améliorer le financement des PME et faciliter leur développement» which was nominated for the same price in 2004. She also supervised the research of nearly fifty students, and participated to more than sixty international conferences where some of her works have been awarded for their quality and relevance.

Her expertise is sollicitated by economic departments for the establishment of public policy dedicated to SMEs as well as various economic development agencies. She is also involved in numerous activities aimed at transfering knowledge to business communities and owners of SMEs.

She has developed several specialized diagnostic tools dedicated to SMEs, in order to measure performance, vulnerability and innovation capacity. These tools have been used in many countries by close to one thousand companies and contribute to build complex databases for scientific research.

She is currently Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on SMEs and Entrepreneurship, which brings together 35 researchers dedicated to deepen our knowledge on SMEs and entrepreneurship.

Louis Jacques Filion

Louis Jacques Filion is the Rogers-J.A. Bombardier Professor of Entrepreneurship at HEC MONTREAL, the Montreal Business School. His specialty area is entrepreneurship.

His academic background includes a B.A. (Classics) from St-Laurent College (University of Montreal) (1966), a B.A. (Honours) in Political Science from the University of Ottawa (1968), an M.A. in International Studies from the University of Ottawa (1974), an M.B.A. from H.E.C. Montreal (1976) and a Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship and Systems from the University of Lancaster, Great Britain (1988).

Dr. Filion’s broad professional experience in entrepreneurship and management includes the fields of human resources, operations management and marketing. He created and managed small businesses. He was also a management consultant with the firm Ernst & Young at their Montreal office.

Dr. Filion was a professor at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières from 1981 to 1993, and Director of the Master’s program in small business from 1986 to 1989. He moved to HEC Montreal in 1993, and has held the Chair of Entrepreneurship since 1995.

In 2004, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Council of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (CCSBE – CCPME) for his contribution to the field of entrepreneurship. In 2005, the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) awarded him its highest recognition, the Wilford White Fellowship, for his contribution to the advancement of entrepreneurship in the world.

In 2006, he received the Julien-Marchesnay Award from the Association internationale de recherche en entrepreneuriat et PME (AIREPME), which is the French-speaking world’s principal small business/entrepreneurship research association. In 2008 he received the prestigious Entrepreneurship Promotion Emeritus Award in recognition of his career-long commitment to the promotion of an entrepreneurial culture among young people. The award was presented by the Premier of Québec at the 28th Mercuriades Gala, held on April 9 at the Montreal Convention Centre.

Dr. Filion has more than a hundred publications to his name as sole author, and a similar number of co-authored publications. He has written several books and has presented speeches on the subject of entrepreneurship on all five continents. His research is concerned with the activity systems of entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, the visionary process, new venture creation and technological entrepreneurship.

Rogers – J. A. Bombardier Chair of Entrepreneurship

Pierre-André JULIEN

Pierre-André JULIEN, Ph.D. in Economic Science from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), and also graduated in Management Science from Laval University (Québec) and doctor honoris causa of the Lorraine Politechnic Institute (France). He is professor emeritus in Small Business Economy at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

His research is based mostly with the SME economy and regional entrepreneurship, mainly about the information networking, innovation and opportunity.

He was the first editor of the Revue Internationale PME, the only academic Journal in French, from its creation in 1988 to 2005. He was fellow visiting or professor visiting at the Sussex University in England, the Pennsylvania University in United States, the Montpellier, Aix-Marseille, Nice, École des Hautes Études en Science Sociale and Dijon Universities in France, the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Spain, the Al Alakhawayn American University in Morocco and the Växjö University in Sweden. He took part in the European Community’s FAST project and in the industrial district project run by the Social Studies Institute of the International Labour Office in Geneva. He acted as expert for SMEs committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris from 1989 to 2010, where he participated in the elaboration of the Charter of Bologna on political issues related to SME, adopted by 47 countries the 15th of June, 2000.

He has published more than 500 reports and scientific papers in French, English, Spanish, Italian, German and Finnish, of which 104 were published in the most important academic journals such as Journal of Small Business Management, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, Small Business Economics, International Small Business Journal, International Gewerbearchiv, Piccola Impresa and Revue Internationale PME and is the author or co-author of twenty-two books on prospective and small business and entrepreneurship, some of which were translated in English, German and Spanish, such as the last one: A Theory of Local Entrepreneurship in the Knowledge Economy (Edward Elgar, 2008) translated also in Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese and Catalan. He has presented 197 papers in conferences (several best paper awards including four at ICSB Conferences), 114 research reports, 46 chapters of books and several applied papers in professional journals. Some of his research are published in handbooks, such as “The small businesses as a research subject. Some reflexions on the knowledge of small business and its effect on economic theory” in N. Krueger (Ed.), Entrepreneurship, London, Routledge, 2003, 4 volumes.

He is also a member of the scientific committee of many scientific referee journals such as Piccola Impresa/Small Business, Sviluppo locale and Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, and Revue Internationale PME.

He has received many awards such as “The Award for his Academic Carrier” by the Industrial Research Managers Association of Québec”, Canada, the award “For his exceptional research contribution in entrepreneurship and SME studies, and which have inspired, initiated and supported a new generation of researchers in this field of study” by the French Academy of Entrepreneurship, the Québec National Order, the Social Science Award by the Canadian French Speaking Association for Sciences Promotion, Canada, “The Lifetime Achievement Award” of the Canadian Council of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (CCSBE), and finally, the Wilford L. White Fellow Award of the International Council for Small Business.

Shaker A. Zahra

Shaker A. Zahra is the Department Chair, Robert E. Buuck Chair of Entrepreneurship and Professor of Strategy & Organization in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, where he is also the Academic Director of the Gary S. Holmes Entrepreneurship Center. Dr. Zahra has served also as the Academic Co-Director of Carlson Ventures Enterprises as well as the Founding Co-Director of the Center for Integrative Leadership at University of Minnesota. Previously, Dr. Zahra was Paul T. Babson Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson College and Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship at Georgia State University. Professor Zahra has also held the 3TU Chair in International Entrepreneurship at Nikos (the Dutch Institute for Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship) at the University of Twente, the Netherlands. Professor Zahra’s research focuses on entrepreneurship and national policy, especially in global technology-based industries and companies; international entrepreneurship; corporate entrepreneurship; and capability development.
